India: The Country

India's FlagModern India was formed culturally—and to a certain extent geographically—by a series of invasions. With inhabitants extending back to at least the stone ages, India is the site (along with Pakistan and Afghanistan) of the Indus Valley Civilization which flourished somewhere between 3000 B.C. and 1700 B.C. If this sounds vague, it's because this mysterious civilization was only rediscovered early in the 1900s and no one has been able to decipher its language. What is known is that its cities utilized a degree of technical planning that were unrivaled in their day.

Stamps of India

Good stamp photos plus
information on the stamp's subject:
Ernakulam
Philatelic Bureau

This airmail stamp of 1929 is typical of the British colonial era before India's 1947 independence. The design features a prominent portrait of England's King George V, but at least this stamp shows a local lake, unlike many early issues that are exclusively devoted to English royalty. This stamp is the fourth value of a set of six.

Gandhi and Nehru StampThis 20p stamp, shows Jawaharial Nehru and Mahatma Gandhi, who were both important figures in securing India's independence from British Rule. The stamp was issued in 1973 to mark the twenty-fifth anniversary of India's independence.

Sri Harmindir Sahib (Golden Temple)This stamp observes the 400th anniversary of the start of construction of Sri Harmindir Sahib, or Golden Temple. (Construction was completed in 1604.) The temple is a holy site and pilgrimage destination for the Sikh religion and is unique for its blend of Muslim and Hindu elements. More information can be found on this page of Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee's website (www.sgpc.net). The temple is located in Punjab province in northern India, not far from the Pakistan border, and fighting over the temple against Afghan invaders in the 18th centery led to substantial bloodshed. Violence erupted again in 1984 (three years before this stamp was issued) when the Indian army attacked the temple to evict a political dissident who had taken refuge there.

Munshi Newal Kishore stampA notable characteristic of the stamps of India is that a great many of them commemorate prominent people in Indian history. Of the 30 commemorative stamps or sets that appeared in 2004, 20 of them commemorated specific individuals. Typical among the honorees is Munshi Newal Kishore, shown on this stamp along with a printing plant. Released in 1970, the stamp pays respect to a publisher who was not only an historic figure, but one who worked tirelessly to preserve historical records. Kishore was born in 1836 when most of the classic works of Islamic and Hindu culture were only available in manuscript form. Kishore established a publishing business that printed over 5,000 works, as well as a newspaper written in Urdu. There is a webpage, written for a 1993 exhibition of some of the products of Kishore's publishing company, that summarizes his accomplishments.
